When the Going Gets ToughThere was a brief period in the early 1990s when some people felt all was well finally—despite what history has to teach us. The fall of the Berlin Wall, the breakup of the former Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War. Good times. Then in the span of six years, the world faced a series of appalling headlines: the Rwandan genocide, ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia, the first African “world war” in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire), and at least three other civil wars (Chechnya, Kosovo, and East Timor).
The 21st century got off to a shaky start. A nation’s emergency phone number took on a different meaning. The first day of school became a nightmare in another country. Mother Nature demonstrated once again who was in charge.
When tragedy strikes—be it natural disaster or man-made unrest—what should you do? Regardless of your decision, you should arm yourself with information. We have compiled below a list of events since
2000 and related Web sites. You should be able to access most newspaper and magazine articles on-line through your local library (using the InfoTrac database, for example). The year following a video/audio or print source is the original broadcast or publication date.
